Geocaching Basics

Instructions: Part 2

Setting up your GPS Receiver

This activity assumes you have access to a GPS receiver. In this example, I am using a Garmin GPSMAP 64. However, less expensive handheld models, such as the Garmin eTrex series, will work just as well.

If you are a registered student at Humboldt State University, check with your instructor for access to GPS receivers.

Take a moment to read the GPSMAP64 Quick Start Manual to become familiar with the menus and options for the GPS receiver. If you are using a different GPS receiver, review the owners manual for that unit.

To avoid confusion, it is a good habit to clear out old waypoints that are no longer needed before starting any project or activity. Start by turning on the GPS receiver. On the Garmin GPSMAP 64, the power button is on the side of the receiver. If you are using a different model, locate the power button. Refer to the owner’s manual if necessary.

Use the Enter button when you want to choose an option.

From the Reset menu, choose the Delete All Waypoints option. If you are asked to confirm your choice, press Yes.
